The "I'm Back!" Sale!

I never thought I'd be on someone's blog roll and see "last updated: one month ago". I have missed blogging and sharing with y'all, but December has pretty much been a blur. I've been working on starting a beauty/fashion blog, which can be found here (but let me warn you, it's in the EARLY stages!) and that's taken up a lot of my time, not to mention that Christmas time in 1st grade is beyond CRAZY!  I'm in Nashville right now with my cousin as she performs at a cheer competition, so when I get back home, I'm planning on catching y'all up on everything that's been going on in my teaching world. As an apology for neglecting my poor little blog, I'm throwing a 20% off sale in my TpT store starting tomorrow (Friday) and ending Monday. You can find my store here. Hope y'all have had a wonderful holiday! :) :)

Humpty Dumpty Sequence

Our comprehension skill this week is sequence. I decided to use a familar text to teach this and Humpty Dumpty fit perfectly! We read the poem on the smart board and identified the sequence. Then we made our own Humpty Dumptys (Dumpties?) The kids LOVED this activity and by the end, everyone could correctly identify the sequence! :)

I just love this one! The little girl who made him wears glasses so she wanted her Humpty Dumpty to wear some too! :)

Election and Veteran's Day

Okay, let me start off by saying I have been the worst blogger here lately. Life is crazy busy. I recently upgraded from a MacBook Air laptop to a MacBook Pro so all my files are scattered between two computers, hence the lack of blogging. Sidenote: if you are thinking about purchasing a computer this Christmas and are looking at a Mac or PC, definitely go with a Mac. I made the switch from a PC last spring and I LOVE my Mac. There's so much you can do on it.
How much do y'all love teaching about the election?? I hate that it only happens once every four years. I was doing my student teaching during the 2008 election so this was the first election where I had my own classroom. We talked about the two candidates and learned about each one through a powerpoint I had created. Then we voted in our voting booth:

Then we did a portrait of Mitt Romney and Barack Obama and wrote why we wanted them to win.

In case you were wondering, President Obama won our class election 9 to 8. :)

We also did a couple of activities for Veteran's Day. We made patriotic kids and wrote a little poem to go with them. It's actually just a lyric from the song "You're a Grand Old Flag".  I plan to put these patterns in my Presidents Day Unit so look for that soon!

We also made soldiers, which the boys loved!

I've also created two new units for Long a and Long i. Click the pictures below to get them!

One of my favorite things to teach in math is fractions. There's so much you can do to teach this and my kids have always done well with this difficult skill. Yesterday we learned about halves and we did my cookie activity from last year

Today we covered fourths and we used the story The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza
We each made a little red hen and a pizza. Once we finished the pizza, we folded it into fourths and drew lines to show the four equal pieces. They LOVED this activity and it helped so much! If you want the patterns, I can fix it up into a little freebie...just let me know!

***If you have commented or emailed me about the Reading Street Comprehension Sheets....I *promise* I am going to upload them! I've been so backed up with units that I haven't finalized them yet. They will be up this weekend! Sorry for the delay!
Update!: Reading Street Comprehension Sheets can be found here.

*****UPDATE 5/29/14 The craft patterns for The Little Red Hen Pizza are now available in my store! I've included extra fraction practice in the unit :) Click here to check it out!
